University of Coimbra is World Heritage Sight
The University of Coimbra (UC), Alta and Sofia were classified as World Heritage by UNESCO at the meeting that is taking place in Phnom Penh, Cambodia.
The dean of UC, João Gabriel Silva, told Lusa that “more than the recognition of the value of the architectural complex of University of Coimbra, this decision of UNESCO emphasizes the universal value of culture and Portuguese language and recognizes the central role Portugal had in shaping the world as we know it today. “
For the Minister of Foreign Affairs the classification of Coimbra as an UNESCO World Heritage Sight benefits “the economy, tourism, knowledge and cosmopolitanism” of the city, but it is also “very prestigious” to Portugal.
